Otter Geography Education

Young people usually exhibit a natural curiosity about the world around them. This affinity is enlarged as they have opportunities to travel and read about places far and near. Any experiences that can strengthen the formation of more complete ideas of true place characteristics from the incomplete geographical perceptions in the minds of young and old alike are very beneficial. Geography education should be fun. Geography education should bring together multiple disparate conceptions in a cohesive whole that can be integrated into the heart and mind of the learner.

One of the goals of Otter Geography is to provide geography education content that enlivens the study of place to the point that the student can reach out with their mind and nearly touch various dimensions of the world’s character. How can this type of geographical education be done? First of all, geography education need not focus on rote memorization of place names and locales. In reality, that knowledge must be a natural result of learning about a place through story, game, and graphic depiction. Second, maps are key tools of geography researchers and educators and they can complement stories of places in a fruitful way. We feel that maps can help bring places into better focus and encourage the development of important spatial analytic skills. In sum, Otter Geography is working to develop geography education products that add zest to the formation of accurate geographic perceptions of students interested in this fantastic place called earth.
